In America and the West, we cherish unalienable rights, including the freedoms that define our very existence. Yet, in other parts of the world, nations make profound sacrifices to obtain and protect these same liberties.
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the Sudanese revolution. On December 19, 2018, thousands of courageous Sudanese took to the streets, risking everything to overthrow one of the most brutal regimes in modern history—a regime that epitomized the forces of darkness in our age.
Their heroism was not without cost. Many thousands laid down their lives so others might taste freedom. Yet, in a tragic twist of fate, poor judgment—mistaken for wisdom at the time—led to a transitional power-sharing agreement with the very military that shielded the regime. This was the same military that had ruthlessly murdered and violated countless civilians.
When the forces of modernity and progress seemed poised to prevail, the forces of darkness retaliated with a vengeance. They ignited a war that has literally burned the nation, displacing millions, starving the vulnerable, and subjecting women, children, and the elderly to unimaginable suffering.
Today, let us stand with the resilient people of Sudan in their unwavering struggle for freedom, peace, and justice. Let us honor the countless families who have lost loved ones, their sacrifices met with an indifferent world that turns a blind eye to their pain and loss.
The civilized world must heed a stark warning: the resurgence of these forces of darkness in Sudan threatens not just the country but human civilization and global peace itself.
Freedom is not merely a privilege—it is a universal right worth defending.
